The first question of starting a website is: where should we host? Since there is an explosion of wikis, there have been a large number of Wiki hosting services-- or wiki farms, as the jargon goes. What I need in a wiki hosting service include: - MediaWiki-based hosting ABSOLUTELY NEEDED. I need to transwiki quite a lot of Conanian material in Wikipedia, and only a MediaWiki-based server would allow convenience in the process, since Wikipedia also runs on MediaWiki.
- Free, if advertising banners are not obstructing.
- The hosting service does not hold any of the intellectual property that are clearly our creation and not released to GFDL.
- The website is not GFW'd. We should not deny all the Chinese Conanians.
There's a list of wiki farms here: www.editthis.info/wiki/index.php/Wiki_hosting_comparison_guide, so that you can provide some opinions.

I think www.wiki-site.com looks like a good option though short of having someone in china check if it is not GWF'd, you can't find out. I've just skimmed what it takes to set up a wiki on your own server so that could be a possible option if ads seem too obtrusive. I know my site is not GWF'd.

There are also two hosting services that are quite big: BluWiki and Wikia that I would also like to consider-- and by Kentaru's methods the two sites doesn't seem to be GFW'd.

I retract my recommendation for BluWiki, due to its failure to support the usage of other domain names. So what's left are: Wiki-sites and Wikia.

I say we should use Wikia, my friend browses Wikia-hosted wikis all the time and never runs into problems.

Wikia looks good. Are there any cons?

I put back Bluwiki on the list. I misread their functions.
The major downside about Wikia is that Wikia does not allow domain name forwarding; it must be [name].wikia.com/wiki/[some article]. You cannot forward [some domain name]/wiki/[some article] to a Wikia wiki but you can in Wiki-site or Bluwiki.

Here I nominate ScribbleWiki and WikiLot and de-nominate Bluwiki. Reason: At least I have seen several usable encyclopedia-type wikis on these two hosts ( Dispersals and ATHF Wiki but not on Bluwiki. Nomination for Wiki-site and Wikia still exists.
